Good Day Saint Peter,
We are writing to you all today with guidance regarding the significant winter storm forecasted for this coming Sunday, January 25.
Despite some variance between forecasting models, we are facing with virtual certainty at least 12 inches of snow accumulation in our area, with precipitation lasting throughout the day Sunday and into early Monday.
While we remain hopeful, the forecast raises the possibility that our Mass schedule will need to be altered this Sunday.
Bearing this in mind, we strongly encourage that our parishioners plan to attend Mass on Saturday Evening at 5pm.
Regarding Sunday Mass Obligations:
The Saturday Anticipated Mass (often referred to as the “Vigil”) features the same readings/prayers as its Sunday counterparts and, importantly, fulfills our Sunday obligation just the same.
If it is not possible for you to attend mass on Saturday evening, know that the obligation to attend mass does not apply in cases of illness, dangerous travel, or other serious reasons.
The 8:30am Saturday Mass does not fulfill our Sunday obligation.
Any decision to cancel Sunday Masses is not made in haste, and many factors are considered. While snow cancellations often elicit strong opinions, we are always called to act charitably and in good faith.
An announcement will be made by 3:00pm on Saturday as to whether Sunday Morning Masses will be held.
Please pray for your friends and neighbors along with all those working to keep us safe and mobile in the storm.
